The Corita Art Center has developed a number of outreach programs to
continue Corita's tradition of teaching in the classroom.
Lesson plans and examples are available upon request.
Pre-Readers
Using Corita’s Circus Alphabet as an entry-point, children
identify letters, how they sound and what they stand for in
Corita’s colorful A-Z serigraphs. Then we make our own sturdy,
26 page accordion books. Children decorate their books with one letter
and a corresponding noun per page.
This 2 hour workshop addresses standards in language arts and visual
arts.
Plus kids get an artful practice book for their ABCs.
Corita's serigraph "i love you" uses text from The Velveteen
Rabbit and this extended lesson uses Corita's serigraph to integrate
literacy learning with visual arts. After reading the story, students
pay careful attention to the shapes, colors and design of
Corita’s picture.
How do these elements interact with the selected text? What do they
express?
Then students put these ideas into practice in their own art.
After selecting or writing a poem of their own, students express the
poetry visually by creating abstract collages that incorporate text,
colors and shapes. This comprehensive lesson fulfills CA standards in
language arts and visual arts.
High SchoolCorita’s serigraphs reflect the signs of her time. Students studying the 1960s see how Corita used events of the day as material for her artful calls to action. Students learn to look more deeply into the visual elements of Corita’s work, recognize the literary references and research the historical context in which she made them. Then students put these ideas to use by making their own collages that send a message about contemporary issues affecting their lives today.
